Indulge in the rich flavors of kopi susu, a traditional Indonesian coffee drink that has gained popularity worldwide for its unique blend of coffee and milk. The name “kopi susu” literally translates to “coffee milk” in Indonesian, which aptly describes the beverage. This delightful drink is a perfect combination of strong coffee and sweet condensed milk, creating a flavor profile that is both soothing and invigorating. In this recipe post, we will guide you through the process of making kopi susu at home, allowing you to experience the authentic taste of Indonesia’s beloved coffee drink.

Introduction to Kopi Susu

Kopi susu is more than just a drink; it’s an experience that brings people together. The traditional method of making kopi susu involves brewing coffee in a cloth filter, which allows the coffee grounds to steep in hot water, resulting in a rich and full-bodied coffee. The coffee is then mixed with sweetened condensed milk, creating a delightful contrast of flavors and textures. Whether you’re a coffee aficionado or just looking to try something new, kopi susu is definitely worth a try.

• 2 tablespoons of coarsely ground coffee beans
• 1 cup of water
• 1/2 cup of sweetened condensed milk
• 1 tablespoon of sugar (optional)
• Ice cubes (optional)

Step-by-Step Guide to Making Kopi Susu

Making kopi susu is relatively simple and requires minimal equipment. With just a few ingredients and some basic brewing skills, you can create this delicious drink in the comfort of your own home. Follow these steps to make the perfect cup of kopi susu:

1. Brew the coffee: Start by brewing the coffee using a cloth filter or a French drip filter. Place the coarsely ground coffee beans in the filter and slowly pour in the hot water. Allow the coffee to drip through the filter, which should take around 5-7 minutes, depending on the coarseness of the grind and the desired strength of the coffee.
2. Prepare the condensed milk: While the coffee is brewing, prepare the sweetened condensed milk. You can either use store-bought condensed milk or make your own by heating up sweetened evaporated milk in a saucepan over low heat, stirring constantly, until it thickens and turns a light brown color.
3. Mix the coffee and condensed milk: Once the coffee has finished brewing, pour it into a cup and add the sweetened condensed milk. You can adjust the amount of condensed milk to your taste, but a good starting point is to use about 1-2 tablespoons of condensed milk per cup of coffee.
4. Add sugar and ice (optional): If you prefer your kopi susu sweeter, you can add a tablespoon or two of sugar to the coffee. You can also add ice cubes to the coffee if you want to make a cold version of kopi susu.
5. Stir and serve: Finally, stir the coffee and condensed milk well to combine, and serve immediately. You can garnish the kopi susu with a sprinkle of cinnamon or cocoa powder, if desired.
